PREAMBLE

The righteous perish
And no one ponders in his heart
Devout men are taken away
And no one understands
That the righteous are taken away
To be spared from evil
Those who walk uprightly
Enter into peace
They find rest as they lie in death (Isaiah 57:1–2)

His Royal Majesty (Late) Edidem Effiong Jimmy Iyawot was likened to a quotation by William Shakespeare “His life was gentle, and the elements so mixed in him that nature might stand up and say to all the world ‘This was a man’.”

He was a man after God’s heart, the David of our Time, pursued but not caught, brave, articulate, perfectionist. A man ready to take any risk to sustain peace and progress for others, a man who loved all his neighbors, his concern for others occupied his daily activities. A man destined for greatness wherever he was, something new and positive happened. He touched nothing which he did not improve upon.

His exploits in the field of teaching, administration, church work, community service and traditional institution are well known and have brought honor to Nsit Ibom, Akwa Ibom State, Nigeria and all of humanity.

On issues bordering on the welfare of his people and government, it is to the eternal credit of the Edidem that he remained fearless, independent and impartial. In other words, regardless of the parties and issues involved, government or non-government, his focus was always centered on dispensing justice to all and sundry. He was an unrepentant advocate of social justice and the rule of law.

To his eternal credit, (Late) Edidem Effiong Jimmy Iyawot never dabbled into partisan politics all through. He had his focus on serving his people, at all times, and this remained his primary constituency. However, to his credit, Edidem, being a typical Akwa Ibom son, had the interest of his people at heart while he lived. He freely gave advice to Akwa Ibom leaders and indigenes as and when necessary. His earnest desire had always been to have Nsit – Ibom and Akwa Ibom State take her rightful place in the comity of states in Nigeria.

The people of the state and Nsit Ibom his immediate constituency will ever remember him for his good deeds. Our youths must learn a lesson from his life and times, on what it takes to succeed in life, which include endurance, perseverance and determination to succeed.

Indeed, it was the hardship he went through that prepared him for the many challenges he met and conquered.

CHRISTIAN LIFE

HRM (Late) Edidem Effiong Jimmy Iyawot would hardly mention his achievements in life without acknowledging his creator. As children, we grew up to know him as a serious minded Christian with unshaken faith for the Almighty. His faith in the Almighty is epitomized in a song he was fond of singing “ma Usana ye Obon, afo eye-kut m’utibe mkpó ke uwem m” (when you walk with the Lord, you will see marvelous things in your life).

In 1995 he found a new faith in Methodist Episcopal Church which he later converted to Methodist Church of Nigeria. He is a philanthropist that cuts across every religious divide. Our father, Edidem (Elder) Effiong Iyawot was a committed and faithful Christian. His affirmation of Christian principles really reflected in his life, character and interactions with people. This also affected his traditional leadership in the community. He was extremely generous, forbearing, tolerant and humble. Many members in the Christian community really benefited from his spirituality, generosity and fatherly disposition. He was firm, fair disciplined and forthright. We have missed a father, a counselor and faithful Christian leader.

SOCIAL LIFE

HRM (Late) Edidem Effiong Jimmy Iyawot was both a social mobilizer and stabilizer. He possessed a charisma that held his audience spell bound. His relationship with both youths and elders in the community cuts no boundary. It was due to his believe in social justice that he always ensured that he presided over all conflicts that were brought to him. He never believed in double standards. He demonstrated a remarkable commitment to the uplifting of his community and the neighbouring villages and L.G.A’s.

Since he was an advocate of peace, most times he sacrificed his convenience for the common good. Nothing was too big a sacrifice for peace and progress in the community. In his 73 years sojourn in mother earth, Edidem had the privilege to taste the pains of poverty and the pleasure of wealth. Like Gold, after the fire, he was refined and became an embodiment of humility and a strong character in the upliftment of the under privileged, an unrepentant promoter of social services to humanity and an epitome of fairness, transparency and equality.

He loved sports particularly, lawn tennis and wrestling. He used to play table tennis with his children. He loved music and used to play the piano.

His philosophy was that life, lived for others is a life worth while.

DEATH

Rumours have been spread and several stories told but it only confirms the sayings of Shakespeare that when beggars die, there are no comets seen but the Heavens themselves blaze forth the death of princes.

At 73 years, HRM (Late) Edidem Effiong Jimmy Iyawot was in a very good state of health. There was not the slightest sign that the Edidem would die in the next 20 years. He walked straight and energetically, talked audibly, clearly and humorously.

On the 20th of October, 2008, he woke up like every other day, hail and hearty. He was in company of visitors in the palace when at about 5pm he started choking after a drink.

For His Royal Majesty (Late) Edidem Effiong Jimmy Iyawot, death came calling unannounced, very swift. If only we can turn the hands of the clock, but we are consoled by the fact that he lived a good life and surely his memories and legacies lives on. He now rest with his creator.
